Welcome to the Year 1 page!

Introduction to Year 1

Year 1 is a big step up from Reception, and it comes with plenty of exciting opportunities and challenges. The children are encouraged to take ownership of their choices as well as becoming strong, independent learners. We have a role-play area that changes every half term as well as a reading area to help develop our love to reading.

Planning

This is our long-term planning overview for Year 1:

Every Half-Term we send more detailed curriculum overviews home for parents via Class Dojo. Here is an example:

Year Group Specific information

At the end of Year 1, children take the Phonics Screening Check. The checks consist of 40 words and non-words that your child will be asked to read one-on-one with a teacher.  It is designed to show how well your child can use the phonics skills they’ve learned up to the end of Year 1, and to identify students who need extra phonics help.

Take a look at some of the useful links below to help practise their phonics at home as well as a parent’s guide.

Homework

In Year 1, we expect children to:

  • Read at least three times per week
  • Practise their weekly spellings list

In addition, each half-term we set ‘Family Learning Projects’ linked to the curriculum being covered in school. Here is an example:
